How to Build Self Confidence

In nearly every aspect of life, self-confidence is important. Despite this, many people struggle with self-confidence. When people lack self-confidence, they may have a more difficult time becoming successful. Your confidence in the eyes of others

Your confidence or lack of it shows up in several ways, including how you act, your body language, the manner in which you speak, and others. Other people read the cues that you give off to determine your level of confidence.

If you have a low level of confidence, it can be self-destructive. People who are more confident tend to be more positive.

What is ‘Confidence?’

Your self-confidence is influenced by your self-esteem and your feelings of self-efficacy. You can gain a greater level of self-efficacy by seeing yourself achieving the goals that matter to you. This type of confidence allows people to feel comfortable enough to accept difficult challenges and to persevere when they are faced with setbacks.

Self-efficacy overlaps with self-esteem. Self-esteem refers to a general sense that you are able to handle what happens in your life and that you have the right to be happy. A sense of self-esteem derives from your feeling of how the people around you think about you, which is something that you might not be able to control. However, it also comes from a feeling that you are competent and can compete when you put your mind to it.

How to Build Self-Confidence

It is possible to become more confident, but it will take work. When you do increase your confidence level, you will also build your success. There are three steps that you can take to build your level of confidence.

Preparing

In order to work to build your confidence, you must first prepare. Preparing involves the following five things:

  1. Think about the achievements that you have already had;

  2. Consider who you are and where you are currently at;

  3. Consider what is important to you and where you would like to see yourself;

  4. Identify the things that are most important to you; and

  5. Set goals that build on your strengths while minimizing your weaknesses.

After you have written down your major goals, figure out the first step for each one. Make certain that you make the first step something small and achievable in a short period of time.

Begin the process of managing your thinking

Managing your thinking is an important part of the process. Pay attention to any negative self-talk in which you engage because it can destroy your level of confidence.

Dedicate yourself to success

Promise yourself unequivocally that you will be dedicated to becoming more confident. If you begin to doubt yourself, write your doubts down and challenge them using rational thought. Write additional goals to help you to manage any genuine risks.

Beginning the journey to greater confidence

At this stage, you will start to slowly move towards your goals. Starting with small steps allows you to move forward towards success while building self-confidence along the way.

Build your knowledge

Review your goals and think about the skills that you will need for them. Identify a solution that can equip you to achieve what you want and that might give you a qualification of which you can be proud.

Achieve your small goals

Setting small goals can help you to achieve things more quickly. Get into the habit of setting small, achievable goals, and celebrate your success when you accomplish each one.

Continue to work on managing your thoughts

Try to think positively at all times. If you catch familiar refrains of negative self-talk, reframe it into something that is positive. Visualizing yourself succeeding can also help.

You should also work to learn how to handle failures along the way. If you treat errors like a learning experience, it can help you to begin seeing them positively.

Accelerate your way to success

By the time that you reach this stage, you will likely already feel your confidence growing stronger. At this point in time, you can begin to stretch yourself. Make your goals larger and up the challenge. Enlarge your dedication and build on the skills that you have attained.
